We transformed the schoolyard of the former Hasadani Elementary School into a private park that functions as a “community chabudai” — a shared table where local residents and visitors can gather naturally as part of everyday life.
The design concept was to create a landscape that connects Hasadani’s past and future. Memories embedded in the former school grounds were reinterpreted as core design elements. Familiar forms from childhood — classroom chairs, the schoolyard sundial, the jungle gym, and the slide — were subtly transformed by enlarging them, arranging them in sequences, linking them together, and forming circular compositions. Through these interventions, the project creates a new landscape unique to Hasadani while preserving the collective memories associated with the site.
In addition, the ground inside the newly constructed perimeter arcade was gently lowered to create a sunken central plaza. This allows adults in the surrounding shops and facilities to casually watch over children playing below. The design carefully establishes a spatial relationship in which people engaged in farming, retail, dining, exercise, play, and walking can each pursue their own activities while remaining aware of others within sight. By fostering this subtle sense of connection, the plaza aims to provide a place where people feel secure, comfortable, and deeply connected to their community.
